When
you're trying to free a buried ball or "fried egg" from a sand trap, you ABSOLUTELY
must use the leading edge of your wedge or sand wedge
to DIG!
Here are some things you need to achieve to "get out of the bunker" on the first try in this situation.
THE DRILL
1. Instead of opening your stance,
square it up and place most of your weight
on the left side (70/30).
2. Place the ball in the middle of
your stance and remember, we want the club
to dig into the sand, not skip, or bounce.
3. Set your hands on the club with
your normal grip, but with the face toed in
slightly. Not to worry... the sand
will square it up making the ball travel down
your intended target line. Practice will tell
you how much "toe-in" you need.
4. Take the club up very steep, making
sure you hinge the wrists immediately. This
will create the desired angle of attack when
striking the sand.
a. The key is to
not swing all the way through the ball.
b. Accomplish this
by leaving the club head in the sand. It WILL force the ball out.
c. Once the ball
comes out, it'll have topspin on it making
the ball roll farther than normal... so take distance into consideration before
executing the shot.
d. The distance the
ball goes is in direct proportion to how hard
you swing, and/or how great your
take away is.
5. Practice this enough and you'll
be putting more Nassau bucks in your pocket!
